We all come from indigenous people who lived on equal or nearly equal terms with the rest of the world. Part of our hearts and spirits yearn for a real relationship with the nonhuman natural world. One of the reasons I live here is because access to the wiid is just down the street.
What a delightful experience! In the silence and safety of your tour bus, there was a sense of wondrous, childlike stillness, a communal moment, a sacred pause, being in touch and awake in the wild. As Marie Curie asserted, "All my life through, the new sights of nature made me rejoice like a child."
We are thrilled with wildlife even as we destroy their habitats and poison the environment. I was in Juneau in July and will tell you about running into a bear in person, on foot at a salmon barbeque. I scared him off with an umbrella! Well, ok, he wasn’t interested in me but in getting to the salmon grill.
All of creation is a welcomed gift, and it brings me delight to (safely) observe our animal relations in their natural habitats.
Thank you for sharing… I get a vicarious thrill from your words! May we continue to have these pleasures as we work to protect our animal brothers & sisters, and this amazing planet.

Humans love the wild, the untamed, the unpredictable danger, and then spend too much time trying to put it all in a box and tame it in the end.
